Waterfox is a web browser focused on security and speed. Although this open-source browser is based on Mozilla Firefox, it is a lighter and more agile version. It has a light theme (Floe) and a dark theme (Abyss). Its development began in March 2011 and it was one of the first web browsers designed to run exclusively on 64-bit operating systems— thus eliminating unnecessary 32-bit code and resulting in a lighter version.
Although most web browsers use engines such as Blink or WebKit, Waterfox works with Gecko. Being based on Firefox, Waterfox is naturally compatible with all Firefox extensions.
In 2021, the browser was split into two versions: Classic and Current. The Classic version was intended to stick with familiar stable technology.
